Potential issues during use

A small number of applications might need slight adjustments to work seamlessly with DaDesktop.

Issues during Fresh Start cloning and fixes available

Most applications run perfectly when set up in the Fresh Start machine while using DaDesktop (DD). However, a couple of applications behave unexpectedly due to the cloning process. These need a few additional steps to get them working normally again.

• Oracle Database Server - The hostname needs to be changed from the one that gets duplicated to 127.0.0.1
• Hyper-V server - Hyper-V has a problem with duplicate mac addresses when the External switch is enabled, if cloned from the FreshStart machine
• Google Chrome - Chrome may not start correctly on cloned machines because of a linked profile to the Fresh Start machine, if the Fresh Start machine wasn't shut down fully during cloning
• WSL - Windows System for Linux - During testing, we found that DaDesktop machines with a WSL installation are not portable. Moving a DaDesktop machine that has WSL installed, it won't boot successfully when shifted to another DD server. The reason is unclear, but we assume Windows makes hardware assumptions during installation that cause trouble when the environment changes. Since WSL is rarely used for training (people usually run Linux directly), we haven’t fully investigated this issue yet
• Issues where a trial software licence uses the MAC address to track the licence - In this case, the licence was tied to a MAC address, so when the machine was cloned, it appeared as though the licence had already been activated and was used up.
• Applications that require licences may need to be added after FreshStart has been cloned.
   

Other Issues that may occur when using DaDesktop

• Very slow Virtualbox seen when using Hyper-V and VirtualBox (This occurs not only when using DaDesktop)

  Problem: VirtualBox on Windows machines becomes incredibly slow, nearly making course delivery impossible, but the fix is really straightforward:-

  Solution 2: Ensure the workaround with Hyper-V Server is used as mentioned above, otherwise duplicate mac addresses are used, causing slow machine usage, booting issues, and other strange behaviour.

• Unable to type certain characters ie Apostrophes / Quotation Marks, Inverted Commas, into DaDesktop machine.
